Paint it red

GasGas is preparing to introduce a new __________ for 2024, which we expect to be very similar to the KTM __________ and the Husqvarna __________. Oops, I forgot to fill in the blanks there, but I think you get the gist. It's no secret that GasGas, following its acquisition by Pierer Mobility, has been introducing motorcycles that are essentially reskinned versions of KTM models. The same goes for Husqvarna too, which gets a similar treatment, only with their frames powder-coated blue instead of KTM orange and GasGas red.

The latest to follow this formula, according to new model year 2024 vehicle identification number filings submitted to the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, are KTM's EXC-F street legal enduro models. The filing, with the vital portion pictured below, identifies a letter combination "GC" which will appear in the fourth and fifth digit of VIN codes for street legal enduro models. These yet-to-be-announced 2024 will thus have VIN codes that begin with VBKGC...

For comparison, here is a similar filing with data for 2023 street legal enduro models from Husqvarna and KTM. The wording is similar to the most recent filing, but with letter codes UA and EX appearing in the fourth and fifth character of VIN codes. Husqvarna's street legal enduros have VIN codes beginning with VBKUA..., with the subsequent characters identifying whether the vehicle is a FE 350s or a FE 501s. Similarly, KTM's 350 EXC-F and 500 EXC-F have VIN codes beginning with VBKEX...

The GasGas filing does not specify any particular engine displacement, but it's probably safe to expect both 350 and 500 versions. GasGas currently offers an off-road only EC 350F enduro model, but the street legal models will have new names. The ES 700 model is street legal, so ES 350 and ES 500 could be potential names, with ES standing for "Enduro Street" and EC for "Enduro Competition". That said, we wouldn't be entirely surprised if GasGas goes in a different direction either.

Whatever the name, we expect the new models to be very similar to their Austrian and Swedish-branded counterparts, with minor differences and likely a lower price point. KTM prices the 500 EXC-F at $12,549 and the 350 EXC-F at $12,149, while Husqvarna has the FE 501s at $12,649 and the FE 350s at $12,249. That's not much variation in MSRPs, so we expect the corresponding GasGas models to be closer to the $12k mark.
