With the first round of AMA Pro Road Racing at Daytona now in the books, it’s clear to see this season is going to be exciting in all classes. Entries were healthy in all classes at Daytona, with the prediction that this trend will continue throughout the season. Of course, with more riders comes the need for more protection. Head protection in this case. For 2012, Bell is stepping up to the challenge and sponsoring five riders. Continue Reading »

Josh Hayes and Blake Young picked things up where they left off by trading wins at the 2012 season-opening AMA Superbike round at Daytona International Speedway.

Reigning champion Hayes of Monster Energy Graves Yamaha took the first race handily, leading almost right from the start of the 15-lap race for the win. Yoshimura Suzuki’s Young, who finished second to Hayes in the 2011 AMA Superbike Championship, responded by taking the second race, but only by a slim 0.002-second margin.

Elena Myers made history once again, winning the second of two AMA Supersport races at Daytona International Speedway. The win was Myers’ second professional AMA victory and gives her the distinction of being the first female racer to ever win a professional motorsports race at the famed Daytona circuit.

The SuzukiScoopFans M4 Suzuki rider became the first woman to win an AMA race, taking an AMA Supersport race at Infineon Raceway in 2010. That race ended on a red flag however, making her Daytona win her first in an interrupted race, with the checkered flag waving as she crossed the finish line first in the second Supersport race 0.239 second ahead of Corey Alexander. Latus Motors is honoring the late Gary Nixon with a special livery for its Triumph 675R entry in the 2012 Daytona 200.

Nixon passed away last year after a heart attack but his memory will live on at Daytona. Defending Daytona 200 winner Jason DiSalvo will try to repeat on the Triumph Daytona 675R wearing leathers inspired by Nixon’s gear as well as the racing legend’s #9. The team will revert to its usual livery and DiSalvo to his usual #40 for the rest of the 2012 AMA Daytona Sportbike season.

Members of Nixon’s family will be in attendance to see the tribute to the AMA Hall of Famer. Nixon’s original Triumph race bike will also be on display at the Latus team’s garage while crew members will dress in uniforms inspired by the period in the ’70s when Nixon rode that bike.

James Stewart gave his 2012 AMA Supercross championship hopes a much needed boost with a big win in sloppy, muddy conditions at Daytona International Speedway.

Heavy rains made the Ricky Carmichael-designed track in Daytona’s tri-oval section even more difficult than the GOAT conceived, with the terrain rough, choppy and rutted.

Series point leader Ryan Villopoto became an early casualty of the track conditions, sliding outon the second corner. That dropped him back to the rear but the Monster Energy Kawasaki rider was able to rejoin the race.

Ryan Dungey will skip the Daytona round of the 2012 AMA Supercross Championship following surgery to repair a broken collarbone.

The Red Bull KTM factory rider injured the collarbonein a crash during training ahead of last weekend’s St. Louis round. Dungey crashed at his training facility in Florida, landing heavily on his shoulder after sliding out in a turn.
