Dirt-Track Racing In Oklahoma

Route 66 parallels Interstate 40 for miles and miles when heading east out of McLean, Texas (where the photo below was shot). The old 66 arches and sways with grades that follow the land’s natural contours, sometimes only feet away from the new highway. Asphalt replacement sections fill in the gaps, like the reconstructed vertebra of a Tyrannosaurus Rex skeleton. Yeah, man, I’m riding a weather-beaten natural history museum all the way to Oklahoma.

A month ago, we published an interview with AMA Pro Racing CEO Michael Lock about the future of the American Flat Track Series. While the topics covered were wide-ranging, we felt that, given the two fatalities at the season-closing event at Santa Rosa, the section on the series’ safety should be broken out into its own section.

The 2017 season of the newly named American Flat Track racing series looks to be an exciting one. A slew of changes will roll out along with the new name. First, the premier class, GNC1, will no longer run Twins at big tracks and Singles at shorter ones, which formerly led to riders being sponsored by competing OEMs at the same time. Then there was the development class, the GNC2, that also had the same structural issues. Among the other changes, AMA Pro Racing CEO Michael Lock plans on implementing is a new elimination-style qualifying format that will have the big names out on the track in front of fans more times throughout the event.

A Taste Of American Supercamp

For 20 years, American Supercamp has been on a mission to teach the riding techniques flat-track racers use. In the process, they’ve been showing motorcyclists how challenging and fun flat-track racing is. Flat track is much more than just motocross without the jumps. Riders must constantly manage speed through sliding on corner entry and tire grip with throttle control on the exit to get a clean lap.
