2024 BMW F 900 GS to Be Revealed Sept. 7

The teasers all show the same image of a motorcycle shrouded in dirt, and the hashtag #spiritofgs. We know a new R 1300 GS will be announced on Sept. 28, ruling it out for next week’s announcement. The next logical candidate is a replacement for the 853cc Twin currently used on the F 850 GS and F 750 GS models, and indeed, the landing pages for those models in some international BMW sites are already returning 404 errors, suggesting some prep work ahead of next week’s reveal. We took a closer look at the teaser image, tweaking the contrast and sharpness, and sure enough, you can make out “F 900” in the graphics behind the BMW roundel, confirming an F 900 GS. If past history is a guide, we can expect an F 800 GS with a detuned version of the same engine, and at some point, an F 900 GS Adventure.

The current F 850 GS and F 750 GS platform was introduced for the 2018 model year, with an update for 2021. Meanwhile, BMW debuted the F 900 R and F 900 XR for the 2020 model year with a 895cc engine. We were a little surprised the GS models continued with the slightly smaller 853cc Parallel-Twin through 2023, but that appears to be changing for 2024.

The F 900 R and F 900 XR have already been confirmed for 2024, producing a claimed 103 hp at 8,500 rpm and 68 lb-ft. at 6,500 rpm (the claimed performance figures are lower in some markets such as the U.S.). By comparison, the F 850 GS and GS Adventure claim 94 hp at 8,250 rpm and 68 lb-ft. at 6,250 rpm (with the same caveat for the U.S. specs). Those numbers aren’t too far off from the figures for the larger engine, so perhaps that’s why BMW held off on upgrading the GS models until now.

The F 900 XR and F 900 R use a similar engine to the GS models, but with a 2mm increase to the cylinder bore, resulting in a 42cc increase in displacement.

So, why change the engine now? The answer is probably related to the Euro 5+ regulations set to kick in for motorcycles in 2024. Euro 5+ adds further criteria such as onboard diagnostics, durability testing and noise limits.

If the F 900 GS does get the 895cc engine, it will likely have a different state of tune better suited for off-road riding. Of course, we can’t rule out the possibility of more extensive changes, including the displacement, as the current F 900 R engine will be four years old in 2024. Any changes that do come will likely trickle down to the R and XR models for 2025.

We’ll know more by Sept. 7, when BMW officially pulls the wraps off the new middleweight GS models.
