Can-Am Sponsored Road Warrior Ride Completes A Successful Tour

Recently, Can-Am sponsored the annual Road Warrior Ride which was organized by the Road Warrior Foundation (RWF). The RWF is a volunteer-operated foundation that seeks to improve the lives of veterans by “utiliz[ing] powersports and adventure to produce a challenging environment that takes people out and puts them back in the driver’s seat.” In the case of the Road Warrior Ride, this “adventure therapy” took the form of hitting the road from Austin, TX to Charleston, SC for a multi-day ride on Can-Am Spyders.

Expedition Recovery: Riding Out the Demons of War

I did the wrong thing 9,085 miles ago. I left late in the day, on little sleep, and on a time crunch. I waved goodbye and headed north from my home to the extreme northern end of the Americas at Deadhorse, Alaska. By a little after midnight I was camping in the Arctic Circle, and all alone with my thoughts. Surprisingly, I had an actual dream, something I’d rarely done since returning from combat in Iraq in December, 2006.

Winning The Peace

The day began like all summer days do in Japan, with the incessant shrieking of cicadas and rapidly building heat. At just 10:00 AM, the atmosphere was already a thick, steamy mess and although I expected the transition as I stepped from the air conditioned comfort of my apartment, I still paused for a moment in that same way a person naturally does when they step into a shower that is set just a little too hot. Even at this early hour it was obvious that it was going to be another scorcher and I toyed briefly with the idea of abandoning my plans and returning to the comfort of the sofa. But my ’91 GSX-R 1100 had sat unused for too long and the truth was I felt guilty about neglecting it.
