Yamaha R1DT Dirt-Track Car

It’s not unusual to hear a Yamaha R1 engine screaming its cross-plane-crank howl down a racetrack, but it is odd to hear eight of them in chorus on a dirt-track course in cars. That was the combo of odd sights and sounds we witnessed at Perris Auto Speedway during an exhibition event at the Budweiser Oval Nationals sprint-car race on November 11.

Dirt-Track Racing In Oklahoma

Route 66 parallels Interstate 40 for miles and miles when heading east out of McLean, Texas (where the photo below was shot). The old 66 arches and sways with grades that follow the land’s natural contours, sometimes only feet away from the new highway. Asphalt replacement sections fill in the gaps, like the reconstructed vertebra of a Tyrannosaurus Rex skeleton. Yeah, man, I’m riding a weather-beaten natural history museum all the way to Oklahoma.

Marquez Wins, Baker Third In Superprestigio

2016 MotoGP World Champion Marc Marquez won the Superprestigio this weekend over second-place finisher Toni Elias, and last year’s defending champion, Brad Baker. With a defeat in 2013, a win in 2014 and another loss last year, Marquez was hungry to reclaim the crown. Number 93 escaped the melee early in the Superfinal and kept his head down as Toni Elias gave chase – with Baker suffering slightly a little further back. With Elias and Baker unable to catch him, Marquez took the flag for his second Superprestigio win.
