New, less expensive, Scrambler 1200 X and enhanced Scrambler 1200 XE

Triumph has announced its Scrambler line-up for 2024. The new additions include the more accessible Scrambler 1200 X and the enhanced top-specification Scrambler 1200 XE.

These new models are powered by Triumph's high-torque 1200cc Bonneville engine, known for its robust performance. Additionally, they feature a 21-inch front wheel tailored for off-road riding. Lastly, they're finished with premium build quality and accents throughout.

The Scrambler 1200 X stays true to the Scrambler legacy by offering the core capabilities and torque-rich performance that Scrambler enthusiasts have come to enjoy. It is complemented by an array of advanced equipment and technology. Triumph has designed this model to be more accessible, with a seat height of 32.28 inches (820mm) which can be lowered to 31.29 inches (795mm) with the accessory low seat. This dedicated specification not only enhances functionality but also comes at a more competitive price point. In a move aimed at reducing ownership costs, Triumph has introduced a 10,000-mile (16,000km) service interval for the Scrambler 1200 X.

On the other hand, the Scrambler 1200 XE receives several updates for the upcoming year. These include the latest-generation Brembo Stylema calipers, an enhanced suspension system with improved adjustability, refined styling elements, and enhanced touring capabilities.

Steve Sargent - Chief Product Officer, Triumph Motorcycles

“Built for both on-road and off-road adventures, the new Scrambler 1200 XE sets an even higher bar for performance, capability, and modern classic style. The Scrambler 1200 X is a new choice for our customers, optimized to deliver the specification riders have asked for, with a lower seat height, even more competitive pricing, and an even better road ride than the previous Scrambler 1200 XC.”

With the high specification and technology that customers value, the new Scrambler 1200 X features:

  • New MarzocchiTM suspension, 1.77” (45mm) USD forks and RSU with piggyback reservoirs and preload adjustability delivering 6.69” (170mm) wheel travel optimized for road riding
  • Advanced rider technology (not fitted to the previous Scrambler 1200 XC) to make the Scrambler 1200 X even better on the road, including new optimized cornering ABS, switchable optimized cornering traction control
  • Multifunction instruments with an integrated TFT display

  • New optimized MarzocchiTM suspension with long 9.84” (250mm) wheel travel front and rear is fully adjustable with enhanced adjustability
  • Revised intake & exhaust headers delivering a broader spread of torque through the upper rev range
  • Enhanced styling details including new compact taillight
  • Improved touring capability with accessory high screen and rugged luggage system with tail bag accessory options.

Thrilling Performance

In terms of engine specifications, both models are equipped with the same 1200cc Bonneville Twin engine, featuring a new, single 1.96-inch (50mm) throttle body and revised exhaust headers. These updates have been aimed at improving the engine's performance by enhancing airflow and broadening the torque range from 5,000 rpm to redline.

For the 2024 models, precise tuning has been carried out to achieve an optimal balance of power delivery for both on-road and off-road riding. Notably, peak power is now available slightly earlier in the rev range, peaking at 89 hp at 7,000 rpm. Additionally, peak torque of 81 lb-ft. is reached at 4,250 rpm.

The exhaust system features high-quality brushed stainless steel silencers, delivering the distinctive and characteristic Scrambler sound that enthusiasts appreciate.

Premium Specification

Both variants of the Scrambler lineup share a dedicated tubular steel Scrambler frame, along with high-specification side-laced stainless steel wire-spoked wheels featuring lightweight and durable aluminum rims. These models do have key ergonomic differences, like distinct handlebar designs. The XE model's handlebars are 2.56 inches (65mm) wider than the X model, making it easier to control on challenging off-road terrain. Riders can further customize their handlebar position using reversible risers, and the XE also offers a removable spacer for a 0.39-inch (10mm) height adjustment. Additionally, the XE provides adjustable foot controls to accommodate various riding styles and footwear.

Both motorcycles come with a twin-sided premium cast aluminum swing arm. The XE boasts a longer swingarm, measuring 22.8 inches (579mm), which is 1.26 inches (32mm) longer than the X model. This extended swingarm contributes to better control and confidence when tackling difficult off-road terrain, while the X's shorter wheelbase enhances agility and responsiveness on the road.

Both models are equipped with Metzeler tires. The X model benefits from the road-focused dual-purpose Karoo Street tires, while the XE variant utilizes Metzeler Tourance tires, providing an exceptional balance of on-road and off-road capability. For those seeking even more extreme off-road performance, the Triumph-approved Michelin Anakee Wild tires are the preferred choice.

In terms of suspension, the X variant features Marzocchi 45mm cartridge forks at the front. The rear suspension units come with piggy-back reservoirs and adjustable preload, enabling riders to fine-tune their riding experience on both the road and off-road terrains.

The XE model has suspension more tailored to off-road riding, featuring Marzocchi 45mm forks and premium twin-spring Marzocchi shocks. These suspension components are fully adjustable and offer greater increments in adjustment for compression and rebound damping. This optimized suspension setup provides an impressive 250mm of wheel travel both front and rear, delivering impressive off-road capability and higher ground clearance.

State of the Art Equipment

Both models are equipped with advanced brake components to ensure efficient stopping performance both on-road and off-road. The XE model features the latest generation Brembo Stylema radial Monoblock front calipers paired with twin 12.6-inch (320mm) floating discs. In the rear there's a 10.04-inch (255mm) disc, complemented by a Nissin caliper.

The X model is equipped with twin 310mm floating front discs, accompanied by Nissin twin-piston axial calipers. The rear braking system consists of a 10.04-inch (255mm) rear disc and a Nissin floating brake caliper, ensuring confident and reliable braking performance while on the road. Additionally, both models allow riders to customize the front brake lever position.

Featuring New and Improved Rider-Focused Technology

Both the Scrambler X and XE models are equipped with optimized cornering ABS and optimized cornering traction control, which adjust intervention levels to maintain optimal traction during cornering at various lean angles. The Scrambler 1200 X offers riders a choice of five different modes, each with its unique throttle response and specific ABS and traction control settings. These modes include Sport, Road, Rain, Off-Road, and Rider Configurable. The XE model also offers an Off-Road Pro mode, designed for experienced riders seeking complete control during challenging off-road riding conditions.

To enhance riding stability, a high-spec Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) has been developed in collaboration with Continental. This IMU system optimizes cornering ABS and traction control by automatically selecting the appropriate settings based on measurements of roll, pitch, yaw, and acceleration rates, thereby calculating the lean angle. In addition, both the X and XE models are equipped with a torque-assist clutch, aimed at improving the overall riding experience.

The Scrambler 1200 XE features integrated full-color TFT instruments that can be customized to suit the rider's preferences. Two design themes for information layout are available, with further options to adjust the displayed information level. Riders can choose between high or low-contrast displays and even personalize the startup screen to make their Scrambler XE feel more unique to them.

In contrast, the Scrambler 1200 X features a hybrid multi-function LCD/TFT display, which is seamlessly integrated into a stylish circular instrument dial. This compact and minimalist display ensures essential information is easily visible at a glance.

Unmistakable Scrambler Custom Style

Both models embody the distinctive Scrambler style with their unique silhouettes, high-level twin exhaust design, and sculpted fuel tank. The Scrambler 1200 XE and X models both feature classic one-piece ribbed bench seats, with the XE version in black and the X model in brown, accentuating their appeal. Additionally, both models have enhanced styling details and compact taillight housings.

These motorcycles are packed with a range of attention-grabbing finishes and details, including sculpted side panels adorned with brushed aluminum Scrambler 1200 badges. They also proudly display the iconic Triumph triangle tank badge, a brushed aluminum Monza-style filler cap, and a brushed stainless strap. The XE model is further distinguished by its brushed aluminum mudguards, while the X version comes with painted mudguards.

Both models offer a choice of three distinct color schemes. The Scrambler 1200 XE is available in Phantom Black & Storm Grey, featuring subtle red accents, a bold Baja Orange & Phantom Black option, and the ever-popular Sapphire Black. Meanwhile, the Scrambler 1200 X model is offered in Carnival Red, Ash Grey, or classic Sapphire Black, providing riders with a range of stylish choices to suit their preferences.

Tailor Your Scrambler

A wide selection of over 70 genuine accessories is on offer to enhance the touring capabilities of the Scrambler motorcycles. These accessories include practical additions like heated grips, a sizable 9.25-gallon (35L) tail bag, and a high 'Dakar' screen. Riders also have the option to install a high-level front mudguard, a handlebar brace, and stainless-steel engine bars to cater to their specific needs.

Notably, the complete rugged luggage system now provides a total storage capacity of 26.95 gallons (102L), ensuring riders have ample space to carry their gear and belongings during their journeys.

On The Road

The Scrambler 1200 X will have a starting price of $13,595 USD and $14,795 CAD, while the Scrambler 1200 XE will start at $15,295 USD and $16,595 CAD. Interested buyers can place their orders at Triumph dealers, and these motorcycles are expected to be available for retail purchase starting in February 2024.

Interesting what marketing has done in the last 20-years with heavy weight adventure bikes going off road, and now scramblers doing the same. Why on earth would someone buy a bike like this and take it off road like it is a dirt bike?

The 'X' version makes a lot of sense until you research a bit further and see what's been removed from the 'XC' for that price savings. Down to only preload adjustability in the rear and none in the forks; 2-pot Nissins at the front; smaller dash. Do shorter riders have to accept lowered specs to go along with the lowered seat? What many of us want, especially those of us who are older riders, is the same top specs but in something we can sit confidently. What the 'X' should have is a 19" front on lighter cast wheels, lowered suspension to get the height down, but otherwise the same spec as the XE. You could change a bit more for the XE because if it's taller suspension and an extra ride mode for off-road, but I don't think the price differential matters. The seat height challenge is what has kept the 1200 scrambler from a wider audience, not the price.
