The “Ran When Parked” raffle – a clever idea with a good cause behind it. Good way to raise money and teach people how to keep their motorcycle running. Not to mention it’s all part of an excellent vintage festival.

Begin press release:

The AMA, in conjunction with Skidmark Garage, is offering a 1975 Yamaha DT100 enduro in the “Ran When Parked” Raffle Bike Challenge at AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days, July 6-8 at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio.

All of the proceeds from the raffle will go to support the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame.

Additional goals of the project are to successfully repair the raffle bike and teach AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days attendees the value and satisfaction of maintaining a motorcycle themselves. The project is also intended to raise awareness of the growing community garage movement.

Skidmark Garage is a community garage in Cleveland, Ohio, where members pay a fee to rent a bay and tool bench stocked with hand tools, lubricants, latex gloves, baggies, torque wrenches, electrical tape, a utility blade, rags and safety goggles.

“One of the main goals of this project is to grow motorcycle ridership,” said Skidmark Garage owner Brian Schaffran. “I hope people walk away being surprised by how much fun it is to get one’s hands dirty and to learn by doing.

“The motorcycle industry’s initial growth took place when people fixed their own machines,” he said. “With the absence of shop class in schools, people are not learning to fix things on their own. I believe that the willingness to maintain your own motorcycle is key to increasing ridership. Community motorcycle garages are a grassroots movement that will help this industry in the short and long term.”

Members of the Skidmark Garage will be on hand to provide tools for performing the repairs and teach event attendees-and one another-about repairing a bike.

Attendees will not only have the opportunity to learn about the project and work on the Yamaha DT100, they might even go into the AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days Swap meet, brought to you by Federal Motorcycle Transport, to find parts for the needed repairs.

“We are happy to add the ‘Ran When Parked’ Raffle Bike Challenge to our lineup of AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days activities,” said AMA Chief Operations Officer Jeff Massey. “The project will help demonstrate the fun and value of performing motorcycle maintenance and allow one lucky winner to take home a freshly repaired vintage off-road motorcycle.”

Only 5,000 tickets will be sold for the raffle. Tickets are available at www.americanmotorcyclist.com/ran-when-parked, or by calling (800) 262-5646. Ticket donations are $5 for one or $20 for five.
