Toni Elias won the 2017 MotoAmerica Motul Superbike Championship with both speed and consistency. The former Moto2 champion won 10 races on the year, and when he didn’t win, he was usually second. In all, the Spaniard was on the podium in 18 of the 20 Superbike races.
Elias started the season with a bang with his third and fourth wins in a row at Circuit of The Americas in Austin, Texas, and he won again in race two at Road Atlanta to win three of the first four races. He crashed out of the first race at VIR, but it was through no fault of his own as he was collected by Josh Herrin. His only other non-finish was a crash in race one in the season finale at Barber Motorsports Park.
When the points were added up at the end of the season, Elias had 88 points in hand over his teammate Roger Hayden and 155 points on two-time MotoAmerica Superbike Champion Cameron Beaubier. He’ll be back on Suzukis in 2018 to defend his title with teammate Roger Hayden. In the video below, Elias talks to Next Moto Champion about his success during the 2017 Superbike season.
