2017 Honda CBR1000RR and CBR1000RR SP Recalled
Water may enter fuel tanks through gap in cap seal
Honda is recalling 2017 CBR1000RR and CBR1000RR SP models because of a potential leak in the fuel filler cap that can let water into to tank. The recall affects 2,443 units in the U.S.
According to documents released by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the fuel tank cap seal may swell, creating a gap between the seal and the fuel filler neck. If the tank is full, the gap could also cause fuel to enter the drain tube during acceleration or braking, but the amount is small enough to not be considered a safety risk. A more pressing concern is that the gap may allow water to enter the fuel tank, which can cause the engine to stall, malfunction, or perhaps even rust if the conditions are right.
The problem was first discovered on March 29, 2017, during a small amount of fuel was found dripping from the fuel drain tube from a motorcycle during a Japanese media test. Honda examined the bike in question in April and discovered the gap in the fuel tank cap seal. Honda then began an investigation on whether the gap could let water into the tank. On Oct. 19, Honda’s American arm initiated recall procedures. As of that date, Honda Motor Co. had received four reports of fuel drainage or seepage in Japan but no reports from the U.S.
Honda dealers will replace the fuel tank cap on recalled models and inspect the fuel tank for signs of water. For CBR1000RR models, which use a steel tank, dealers will replace the fuel tank, fuel pump and fuel injectors. SP models, which have titanium tanks, Honda will only replace the fuel pump and fuel injectors.
