Proposed Louisiana Bill Will Exempt Motorcycle Helmets From Mask-Wearing Ban
Except for Mardi Gras, Halloween, or religious reasons, did you know it’s against the law in Louisiana to cover your face with a mask or hood? Neither did we. As it turns out, there have been some overzealous police officers in the state looking to exploit this little-known law, pulling over and ticketing motorcyclists wearing helmets because the safety devices covered their faces, hence breaking the law. That’s right – motorcyclists were being ticketed for wearing helmets.
Realizing the absurdity of ticketing helmeted motorcyclists, Rep. Alan Seabaugh, R-Shreveport, introduced House Bill 161, which would exempt helmeted motorcyclists from the mask ban. The bill looks likely to pass, as committee members signed off on it April 19 during the 2017 legislative session. Chalk this up as one instance where common sense wins the day.
