Yamaha R3 Recalled for Potential Fuel Leak and Ignition Switch Corrosion
Yamaha is conducting two different recall campaigns for the 2015-2016 YZF-R3. One recall is to prevent a potential fuel leak and the second to address a problem that can cause the ignition system to corrode. The two recalls each affect 14,320 units in the U.S.
According to documents released by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, engine vibrations can weaken the fuel tank’s fitting bracket, potentially causing it to crack and possibly leak fuel, creating a fire risk.
The problem was first identified on Feb. 10 during a quality control review by Yamaha’s Indonesian subsidiary which manufacturers the R3.
Yamaha dealers will inspect the fuel tanks on recalled units and, if necessary, replace the fuel tank fitting bracket with a redesigned component.
Regarding the ignition issue, recall documents explain that water may contaminate the main switch, causing corrosion. This may cause the engine to stall, potentially causing loss of control and increasing the risk of a crash.
The ignition problem was also identified on Feb. 10 during a quality control review in Indonesia.
Yamaha dealers will replace the main switch subassembly on recalled units.
