Congressional letter aims to address Bikes for Beef tariff. Urge your representative to sign by March 7

Congressional Motorcycle Caucus co-chairs U.S. Reps. Michael Burgess (R-Texas) and Tim Walberg (R- Mich.) are taking the lead on sending a letter to the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative to urge the agency to remove motorcycles from its proposed 100 percent tariff.

The tariff is part of a dispute with the European Union over U.S. beef that contains hormones, and would affect motorcycles imported from Europe with an engine size between 51cc and 500cc.

The congressional Bikes for Beef letter is a response to the USTR’s proposed tariff and to rebut pro-tariff testimony presented during a Feb. 15 public hearing in Washington, D.C. A member of the USTR staff stated during that hearing that the USTR hopes to use motorcyclists as leverage to get the EU to reverse its policy on U.S. beef.

The deadline for signatures is March 7.

The American Motorcyclist Association opposes the proposed tariff, because trade disputes residing within the boundaries of the agricultural industry should not be solved with trade sanctions levied against non-agricultural products. And this tariff would harm American consumers by raising prices and reducing product choice.

The USTR’s acceptance of rebuttals to the Feb. 15 testimony provides an opportunity for the public to urge federal lawmakers to weigh in on the proposed Bikes for Beef tax. And the AMA has the tools to make it easy for you to submit an email to your lawmakers.

Now more than ever, it is crucial that you and your riding friends become members of the AMA to help protect our riding freedoms. More members mean more clout against the opponents of motorcycling. That support will help fight for your rights – on the road, trail, racetrack, and in the halls of government. If you are a motorcycle rider, join the AMA at AmericanMotorcyclist.com/membership/join.
