2016 AMA Hillclimb Grand Championship kicks off July 29 in Neoga, Ill.

More than 300 competitors entered in the event

PICKERINGTON, Ohio — More than 300 amateur motorcycle and ATV hillclimb racers from across the country will compete at the 2016 AMA Hillclimb Grand Championship July 29-31 in Neoga, Ill.

The event is hosted by the Pleasure Riders Motorcycle Club at the Thunder Ridge facility.

“The top amateur hillclimb racers in America will have their skills put to the test as they attempt to conquer the hill at this newly developed facility,” said AMA Track Racing Manager Ken Saillant. “Those who become AMA National Champions will be recognized as the best of the best at the 2016 AMA Championship Banquet in January in Columbus, Ohio.”

In addition to chasing an AMA National Championship, racers will contest for awards recognizing the AMA Hillclimb Racer of the Year, AMA Vet/Senior Hillclimb Racer of the Year, AMA ATV Hillclimb Racer of the Year and AMA Youth Hillclimb Racer of the Year.

The King of the Hill award also will be given to the fastest competitor in a run-off. The riders with the 10 fastest times during the weekend will compete for the honor in a one-run class at the end of the program on Sunday.

“Pleasure Riders Motorcycle Club is proud to host the 2016 AMA Hillclimb Grand Championship,” said Pleasure Riders Motorcycle Club member Kaleb Northrup. “We’ve hosted state championships in the past in Illinois and Indiana for motocross and hillclimb, but this is our first national championship. It’s also the first time since 1988 that the AMA Hillclimb Grand Championship has been held in Illinois.

“The new facility is really fantastic, and the development of that location by the owner, family and friends is astounding,” Northrup said. “Our event will see riders battle on this brand new hill, and we can’t wait to see the action.”

Tech inspection and rider check-in is noon to 6 p.m. on Friday, July 29. Competition begins at 8 a.m. on Saturday, July 30, and Sunday, July 31.

Event entries closed July 1, and no entries will be accepted at the event. Competitors receive free weekend gate passes. Weekend gate passes are available for noncompetitors for $20. Children ages 5 and younger are free. Onsite camping is available for $50 per vehicle.

Hillclimb is one of the AMA’s oldest racing disciplines, dating to the early 1900s. The country’s best amateur motorcycle and ATV hillclimbers attempt to reach the top of the hill, each determined to get the fastest time.
