2016 Kawasaki Ninja ZX-10R Recalled Because Steering Damper Mounting Bolts Are Too Tight
Kawasaki is recalling 2016 ZX-10R models because the steering damper mounting bolts may be too tight.
According to documents released by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the mounting bolts were tightened beyond the specified torque during assembly. This may cause the bolts to break, unfastening the steering damper bracket and increasing the risk of a crash.
The problem was first reported in January by a European distributor. Kawasaki then inspected its assembly process and determined the mounting bolts were over-tightened. Rigidity tests conducted this month determined the excessive torque may cause the bolts to break during use.
ZX-10R models produced from Oct. 28, 2015 to Jan. 18, 2016 are included in the recall, affecting 805 units in the U.S. Units produced after that period had the proper levels of torque applied to the mounting bolts.
Kawasaki dealers will replace the steering damper bracket mounting bolts on affected models.
