Wayne Rainey Named 2015 AMA Motorcyclist of the Year
The American Motorcyclist Association has named Hall of Famer Wayne Rainey the 2015 Motorcyclist of the Year, recognizing the role the MotoAmerica president played in revitalizing professional road racing in the U.S.
Rainey, a three-time World Champion and two-time AMA Superbike Champion, brought immediate credibility to MotoAmerica in its first year as the country’s top-tier road racing championship.
With Rainey at the helm, MotoAmerica secured the rights to AMA Pro Road Racing from Daytona Motorsports Group late last year. MotoAmerica reversed many of DMG’s controversial rules, bringing U.S. racing more in line with international racing series and receiving official sanctioning from the International Motorcycling Federation (FIM).
“Wayne Rainey and his partners and employees at MotoAmerica demonstrated in 2015 that they had the knowledge, fortitude and collective wisdom to not only restore professional road racing in America to greatness, but to reinvigorate an industry and fan base that had been languishing for years,” says Rob Dingman, AMA President and chief executive officer.
“That success is built firmly on the foundation of Wayne’s character and perseverance to be successful at what so many before him have realized is one of racing’s most challenging tasks,” Dingman adds. “Where others failed, Wayne is succeeding, and his efforts transcend the sport itself in many ways.”
Rainey and MotoAmerica will be featured in the January 2016 issue of the AMA’s American Motorcyclist magazine.
