Massive Honda Recall Expanded to Canada; US Likely Next

Last month, we reported on a recall on 29,232 Honda motorcycles in Japan to address a problem with their starters. As we speculated, the problem affects motorcycles in other markets, with Transport Canada announcing a recall for 8,019 motorcycles, covering 26 different models (see below for the .)

According to Transport Canada, the starter relay switch may have been incorrectly treated with sealant during assembly, resulting in increased resistance across the main fuse. This may potentially interrupt the electrical system, causing the engine to stall or fail to start. Increased resistance may also be a fire hazard.

Honda dealers will inspect the starter relay switch on affected units and replace them if necessary.

As of this writing, no recall has been announced for the U.S. market, but given the scope of the Japanese and Canadian recalls, we expect to hear one soon from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The recall affects the following models:

  • 2015 Honda CB300FA
