The inaugural 2015 KTM RC Cup took place this weekend at the historic 4.048 mile Road America racetrack in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin at the MotoAmerica Series event and featured an impressive 27 entries. Gage McAllister of Lincoln, California’s secured an early season lead by claiming a double victory in the five-event race series. The series, conducted on spec KTM RC 390 race bikes, is designed to groom young racers from 14 to 22-years-old to be the next generation of professional American racers to compete on the national and international stage.

Gage McAllister left the weekend with two wins and a 14 point lead.

The racers got to jump into competition in less than ideal weather conditions as rain played a role throughout the weekend. While Josh Serne, from Placerville, California, qualified in pole position, a sighting lap mishap put him on the sidelines in race 1. McAllister notched the first race win after the two other participants in the three bike battle for the lead ended up in the dirt, making it possible for Jody Barry and Brandon Altmeyer to collect second and third, respectively.

“That was really my first race in the rain,” said McAllister after the race, “but it was the perfect bike to do it on, the KTM was really smooth in the rain.”

The second race featured a flat-to-flag three way battle for the win that was decided on the last turn when McAllister made his pass stick all the way to the line. Braeden Ortt finished a close second with Barry getting on the podium for the second time of the weekend in third.

“It was a very smart move on [McAllister’s] part, he got me on the draft and made the pass right before the finish,” Ortt said. “It was a tough last lap but we have to play it smart at the end. I’m just happy to be here.”

Close racing and developing young racers. What could be better?

McAllister leaves Road America with a perfect 50 points and a 14 point lead heading into round two. Barry, with two podiums for the weekend, is in second with 36 points. Ortt and Altmeyer are tied for third with 29 points.
