Honda reported sales of 4.43 million motorcycles and ATVs in its fiscal third quarter ended Dec. 31, 2014, a 4.3% increase on the 4.25 million reported in the same quarter the previous year.

North American sales totaled 69,000 motorcycles over the quarter, compared to 63,000 from the previous fiscal third quarter. The Asian market continues to produce the bulk of Honda’s sales with 3.87 million motorcycles sold over the quarter, up from 3.68 million. Sales were also up in Europe (69,000 from 63,000) but down in Japan (49,000 from 52,000) and other markets.

Motorcycle operations generated ¥463.4 billion (US$3.845 million) in sales revenue over the third quarter, up 15.8% from the previous year. Honda’s motorcycle business contributed an operating income of ¥53.5 billion (US$444 million), a 55.2% increase from the previous year. Honda attributes the increase to strong demand, an improved model mix and favorable currency exchange rates.

For the fiscal year to date, Honda’s motorcycle sales are up 5.0% with 13.15 million vehicles sold, compared to 12.521 million sold in the first three quarters the previous fiscal year. Honda expects to sell another 4.67 million units in the fourth quarter, forecasting a final fiscal year total of 17.8 million motorcycles.

Despite the strong performance of its motorcycle division, Honda reported a 22.5% drop in operating income to ¥177.2 billion (US$1.47 million) while the net income of ¥136.5 billion (US$1,132 million) is a 15.1% drop from the same quarter in the previous year.
