2013 US Motorcycle Sales Data
The Motorcycle Industry Council (MIC) reported a modest 1.4% growth in U.S. motorcycle and scooter sales in 2013, with consumers purchasing 465,783 vehicles. The sales data represents numbers from the MIC’s member brands which include BMW, Can-Am, Ducati, Harley-Davidson, Honda, Kawasaki, KTM, the Piaggio Group (which includes Aprilia, Moto Guzzi and Vespa), Victory, Suzuki, Triumph and Yamaha.
Dual-sport motorcycles saw the largest year-over-year growth percentage with a 7.8% increase in sales compared to 2012. The off-road motorcycle segment also saw a 5.7% improvement as it rebounds after seeing the largest decreases during the economic downturn. Still, the 73,371 off-road motorcycles sold in 2013 remain slightly less than half of the total of 146,742 units sold in 2008.
Street motorcycles are also a shadow of what they were pre-downturn, but the segment continues to grow, with the industry selling 6,485 more motorcycles than in 2012. Those gains were nearly negated however by a 6,363 unit decrease in scooter sales.
