Lightning has announced it has completed all of the required DOT and DMV requirements in order to gain a VIN number for at least one of its motorcycles.

The picture above was the only one supplied by Lightning, which we assume corresponds to the production version of the Lightning Superbike I rode in August of last year. However, Lightning is also producing a Sportbike with performance levels more accessible to the average rider (meaning, less manic than the Superbike), which this VIN number could also be corresponding to.

Lightning’s announcement about VIN certification closes with the news that the Superbike street fairing is nearing completion and is in the final stage of clay modeling. It makes sense that the company’s initial offering would be a street version of its Superbike, which would lend more weight to it being the one to pass the required VIN certifications.

Troy's been riding motorcycles and writing about them since 2006, getting his start at Rider Magazine. From there, he moved to Sport Rider Magazine before finally landing at Motorcycle.com in 2011. A lifelong gearhead who didn't fully immerse himself in motorcycles until his teenage years, Troy's interests have always been in technology, performance, and going fast. Naturally, racing was the perfect avenue to combine all three. Troy has been racing nearly as long as he's been riding and has competed at the AMA national level. He's also won multiple club races throughout the country, culminating in a Utah Sport Bike Association championship in 2011. He has been invited as a guest instructor for the Yamaha Champions Riding School, and when he's not out riding, he's either wrenching on bikes or watching MotoGP.
