James Stewart has signed a multi-year contract with JGRMX, the motocross division of Joe Gibbs Racing.

Stewart raced the last three years with the L & M Yamaha factory team, and he will continue with the Tuning Fork brand with JGRMX, riding a Yamaha YZ450F. The two-time AMA Supercross and one-time AMA Motocross Champion will debut with JGRMX at the Jan. 7 Supercross opener in Anaheim, Calif. Terms of Stewart contract were not announced, but the term will likely coincide with the term for JGRMX’s deal with Yamaha which runs until 2014.

Stewart is also expected to return to outdoor racing and compete in the 2012 AMA Motocross season. Stewart hasn’t competed in a full MX season since his perfect 2008 season, winning every single moto with the Monster Energy Kawasaki team.

Ryan Villopoto swept all three main events to win the inaugural Monster Energy Cup and take home the $1 million prize.

The 2011 AMA Motocross and Supercross Champion was a favorite going into the Oct.15 Monster Energy Cup at Sam Boyd Stadium in Las Vegas, Nev. Villopoto completed the hat trick by winning the Cup and the prize money.

“It’s pretty unreal,” says  Villopoto. “I’m happy we were able to pull it off. To back it up next year would be hard, so if we do, it would be great.  I can’t thank my team enough for this amazing victory.”

Ryan Dungey will make his competition debut in KTM orange at the inaugural Monster Energy Cup, Oct. 15 at Sam Boyd Stadium in Las Vegas, Nev.

Dungey signed a two-year contract with KTM on Oct. 1, reuniting him with former Suzuki team manager Roger DeCoster. Dungey wasn’t expected to be ready to compete in the Monster Energy Cup but after practicing for a few weeks, Dungey has thrown his hat in the ring for the event’s $1 million purse.

“To my surprise, Ryan was eager to race the Monster Cup,” says Roger DeCoster, team manager of the Red Bull KTM factory team. “We didn’t expect him to race after only two weeks on the bike, but he will use the event to help gauge where he stands speed-wise against the competition. It will also give the team a racing opportunity to test different set-ups with the bike prior to the opening round of the Supercross. Ryan can then take this experience to prepare his training regime this winter.”

AMA Pro Racing has released a new supplemental rules package for the Oct. 15 Monster Energy Cup race at Sam Boyd Stadium in Las Vegas. In short? Anything goes.

For the one-off event, the AMA has eliminated nearly all technical restrictions except sound and fuel regulations. Engines must be at least 125cc but otherwise all engine configurations are allowed.

“No homologation is necessary, and the engine displacement must be at least 125cc. Beyond that, nearly anything goes — two-stroke, four-stroke, singles, twins. Weight restrictions are gone. Large-displacement two strokes are welcome,” says Kevin Crowther, AMA director of Supercross. “We are also implementing new sound-testing procedures. We will be using the new 2-Meter Max sound-testing method that will be implemented for the 2012 Monster Energy AMA Supercross, an FIM World Championship.”

KTM has signed Ryan Dungey to a two-year contract to race in the 2012-2013 AMA Supercross and Motocross seasons. The deal reunites Dungey with team manager and motocross icon Roger DeCoster.

Dungey and DeCoster share a connection that goes back to 2006 when the former world champion recruited Dungey for the Suzuki factory racing team. Under DeCoster’s tutelage, Dungey swept the 2009 AMA Supercross Lites West and 250cc Motocross championships. The following season, Dungey moved up to the 450cc class and again won both the Supercross and Motocross titles.

The 2011 AMA Supercross Championship featured some of the most competitive racing we’ve seen in some time, with five riders in contention for the title for most of the season, culminating with Ryan Villopoto winning his first premiere class championship.

GoPro, the official sports camera for AMA Supercross, has released a video of highlights from the 2011 season filmed entirely with its HD Hero camera. Several riders in the 450 class and the 250 class wore GoPro HD Hero cameras throughout the season, with some of the footage featured on television broadcasts on CBS and Speed.

“Throughout the season GoPro’s HD cameras have captured the up close and personal excitement that both riders and fans witness out on the track. The incredible videos that have been produced by the GoPro team have brilliantly captured the intensity of supercross,” says Tim Murray, vice president of sales for AMA Supercross promoter Feld Motor Sports. “We have received great support and incredible footage from GoPro this season and we look forward to continuing the relationship into the 2012 season.”

The last time we checked up on James Stewart, he wasn’t having a good year.

First, there was the season-ending injury in the second round of the 2010 AMA Supercross campaign, an ill-advised comeback at the Unadilla National, and then a much-panned open letter after getting left off Team USA for the Motocross of Nations. In all, Stewart took part in just three races in 2010.

So what has he been up to? Thanks to a new video from Yamaha Motor Corp. U.S.A., we know the answer. Let’s hope Stewart has a better 2011, starting with the AMA Supercross season opener Jan. 8 in Anaheim, Calif.
