Ducati North America set a new sales record in 2012, selling 10,883 motorcycles in the U.S., Canada and Mexico. The 2012 sales represent a 21% increase over its 2011 results in a time where industry-wide sales have flat-lined. The growth further cements the U.S. as Ducati‘s largest market.

In 2011, Ducati Chief Executive Officer Gabriele Del Torchio announced U.S. sales had surpassed domestic sales in Italy as the company’s biggest market, a result of the company’s growth in North America combined with a fragile economy in Italy. That gulf has further widened with Ducati’s U.S. sales growing 21% in the U.S. At the same time, Canadian sales saw an increase of 25% while sales in Mexico grew at a much more modest 7%. Ducati North America set a new monthly sales record selling 1,782 motorcycles in May, easily surpassing its previous record of 1,394 units sold set in June 2008.

Helping drive sales was the introduction of the new 2012 Ducati 1199 Panigale and the Streetfighter 848 last month. The two new models helped Ducati North America see a 49% year-on-year sales increase for the month.

For the year so far, Ducati has sold 4,844 motorcycles in North America, a 19% increase over 2011′s sales in the January to May period and a 98% increase over the results from 2010. Continue Reading »

Ducati North America announced growth of 43% in 2011 compared to 2010, resulting in the Bologna company’s largest ever market share in the U.S., Canada and Mexico.

The announcement reinforces claims made by Ducati Chief Executive Officer Gabriele Del Torchio last September: North America has replaced Italy as Ducati’s #1 market.

Ducati attributes its growth to the popularity of the Diavel and Mulistrada in North America. Both models expanded Ducati’s reach beyond its core sportbike segment. Ducati hopes to continue that growth into 2012 with the introduction of the new Ducati 1199 Panigale and the 848 EVO Corse Special Edition.

Schuberth helmets has announced the forthcoming additions to its North American offerings including the top secret S2, the roadracing SR1, the C3 World Graphic and the auto racing SF1.

The S2 made only a brief debut and pictures were restricted but the full-face sibling to Schuberth’s C3 modular helmet was given its first public appearance to the dismay of those back home in Germany. The S2 replaces Schuberth’s S1 helmet introduced in 2002. Like the C3 launched in the U.S. last year, the S2 features an internal sun visor, improved aerodynamics and ventilation and a significant weight savings and more compact design compared to the original S1. The S2 will receive an official launch at the U.S. at the Dealer Expo trade show held in February 2012. Look for more about the S2 during that time period.

As exciting, if not more so, is the SR1 roadracing helmet. The SR1 is a seriously lightweight helmet weighing, in ECE guise, approximately 1,295 grams (2.85 lbs.). The helmet is currently undergoing D.O.T. approval which will add upwards of 50 grams to the helmet’s weight. The process will also stall the introduction of the SR1 until 2013. The SR1 is constructed of a special fiberglass-reinforced duroplastic matrix. The SR1 features three adjustable air intakes in the front (two at the forehead and one at the chin) and two outlets in the rear. The helmet also comes with an anti-scratch  visor with anti-fog coating, breath deflector and push-botton release for the faceshield.

Retail prices were not available but expect both helmets, like the C3, to be in the area of $700.

Schuberth also introduced the World graphic option for C3 modular helmets and for auto racing enthusiasts the Schuberth SF1 will also be offered in North America.
