Ryan Villopoto captured his fifth-consecutive AMA Supercross win and sixth in seven rounds with a victory in the main event at Reliant Stadium in Houston, Texas.

The Monster Energy Kawasaki rider passed holeshot-taker Mike Alessi on the opening lap and led the rest of the way for the win. Alessi, riding the Motoconcepts Racing Suzuki RM-Z450, remained in the hunt for the first few laps but soon gave way to a group including Team Honda Muscle Milk’s Trey Canard, Red Bull KTM‘s Ryan Dungey and Yoshimura Suzuki’s James Stewart.

With Villopoto uncatcheable, it was up to that trio to provide the drama. Canard sat in second for most of the first seven laps until a Dungey pass on Lap 7. A couple of laps later, Stewart made a challenge on Dungey but crashed in the attempt, damaging his front wheel. Continue Reading »

Ryan Villopoto continues to be in championship form, taking his third consecutive victory and sixth of the season with a win at Lucas Oil Stadium for the Indianapolis round of the 2013 AMA Supercross Championship.

The Monster Energy Kawasaki rider had a calculated, methodical race to take the win and expand his championship lead to nine points ahead of Davi Millsaps.

Millsaps took the holeshot in a chaotic start to the main event that saw several riders go down at the opening corner. Millsaps’ lead was shortlived, as the Rockstar Suzuki rider went too far wide on a turn, allowing Yoshimura Suzuki‘s James Stewart to take the lead. Millsaps managed to stay ahead of Villopoto with Red Bull KTM‘s Ryan Dungey also in the mix. Continue Reading »

Ryan Villopoto captured his series-leading fourth win of the season in a red-flagged main event before a record crowd of 60,178 at St. Louis’ Edwards Jones Dome, as the 2013 AMA Supercross season reaches its midway point.

The race started with MotoConcepts Suzuki rider Mike Alessi taking the holeshot with Muscle Milk Honda‘s Justin Barcia and Yoshimura Suzuki‘s James Stewart on his tail. Last week’s winner Stewart later quickly moved into the lead but the race was soon halted on Lap 3 after JGRMX Yamaha‘s Kyle Chisholm and BTO Sports KTM‘s Matt Goerke collided on a jump.

The race was halted so a medical crew could attend to Chisholm. While the red flag was out however, Villopoto performed a double jump instead of rolling through it as required, forcing officials to penalize him on the restart. After Chisholm was carted off the track, the riders lined up in a staggered formation in the order they were in the previous lap, except for Villopoto who was penalized three positions, dropping him to sixth from third place. James Stewart captured his first AMA Supercross win in nearly a year, leading every lap in front of 68,987 fans at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta in his most consistent main event showing so far this season.

The Yoshimura Suzuki racer was dominant in Atlanta, posting the fastest qualifying times and taking the holeshot to lead his eight-lap heat race before doing it again in the 20-lap main event. Stewart’s previous win was March 10, 2012, at Daytona International Speedway.

Monster Energy Kawasaki‘s Ryan Villopoto presented the only real challenge for Stewart but trailed the entire race, finishing 1.468 seconds behind. Series leader Davi Millsaps of Rockstar Energy Suzuki finished third and maintains a 22-point lead over Villopoto in the championship standings. Continue Reading »

Davi Millsaps captured his second main event win of the season and expanded his AMA Supercross championship lead to 19 points with a wire-to-wire victory at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego.

The Rockstar Energy Suzuki rider jumped ahead at the start for the holeshot and held that lead for the entire 20-lap race for the win. Finishing 2.386 seconds back was Team Honda Muscle Milk‘s Justin Barcia while Red Bull KTM‘s Ryan Dungey finished 10.300 seconds back for third place.

Following Millsaps through the first corner were RCH Dodge Suzuki rider Broc Tickle and TwoTwo Motorsports Honda‘s Chad Reed. Barcia joined the lead group and moved past Tickle for third spot on Lap 3. Millsaps, Reed and Barcia formed the lead pack for much of the first half of the race. Continue Reading »

James Stewart and the Joe Gibbs Racing MX (JGRMX) Yamaha racing team have agreed to cut ties, ending their multi-year contract after a single AMA Supercross season. Stewart almost immediately signed a new multi-year deal with Yoshimura Suzuki to compete in both the AMA Supercross and AMA Motocross Championships.

Stewart had a promising start to the season with JGRMX but wasn’t as competitive as eventual champion Ryan Villopoto or Ryan Dungey. After winning the Daytona Beach, Fla., round, Stewart was injured in a crash at the following round in Indianapolis. Since then, Stewart has missed several rounds, scoring only a single point in the final seven rounds. Continue Reading »

Ryan Villopoto moved one step closer to repeating as AMA Supercross Champion with his seventh win of the season at Rogers Centre in Toronto, Canada. With his chief rivals not making the trip north of the border due to various injuries, Villopoto can clinch the 2012 championship as soon as next weekend’s race at Reliant Stadium in Houston, Texas, if they continue to be out of action.

The Monster Energy Kawasaki rider has 271 points with five rounds remaining. Mathematically speaking, Villopoto can still be caught by Red Bull KTM rider Ryan Dungey (192 points) and JGRMX Yamaha‘s James Stewart (177) should either of them win the remaining five rounds. Realistically however, the title is all but Villopoto’s.

Dungey however has missed the last three rounds while Stewart has missed the last two. They may still yet return for Houston, though they likely won’t be 100%. In their absence, Villopoto has been racking up the points. Villopoto only needs to stay healthy and continue finishing races to win the championship. That’s no easy task in itself, as Villopoto demonstrated in the whoops in Toronto.

Six more rounds remain in the 2012 AMA Supercross season and the championship is more or less decided. The first third of the season was a thrilling four-man fight for the title. The middle of the season saw contenders drop like flies and now, what looked to be a dramatic battle for the title is shaping up to be a second consecutive AMA Supercross Championship for Ryan Villopoto.

First it was TwoTwo Motorsports Honda rider Chad Reed suffering a season-ending injury at the Arlington round. Then, before the St. Louis round, Villopoto’s biggest challenger Ryan Dungey crashed hard in training. Dungey competed in St. Louis but missed the ensuing Daytona round as well as this past weekend’s race in Indianapolis. And finally at Indy, JGRMX Yamaha‘s James Stewart suffered a concussion during practice and was forced to withdraw from the event.

While his rivals were going down with injuries, Villopoto kept winning. The Monster Energy Kawasaki racer captured his sixth win at the season at Lucas Oil Stadium, putting him firmly in the lead in the title chase at 246 points, and 54 points ahead of an idled Dungey.

James Stewart gave his 2012 AMA Supercross championship hopes a much needed boost with a big win in sloppy, muddy conditions at Daytona International Speedway.

Heavy rains made the Ricky Carmichael-designed track in Daytona’s tri-oval section even more difficult than the GOAT conceived, with the terrain rough, choppy and rutted.

Series point leader Ryan Villopoto became an early casualty of the track conditions, sliding outon the second corner. That dropped him back to the rear but the Monster Energy Kawasaki rider was able to rejoin the race.
