Ryan Villopoto claimed his first win of the 2013 AMA Supercross season and his first since the knee injury at last year’s Seattle round that kept him out of the 2012 AMA Motocross championship. The victory in front of 37,789 fans at Angel Stadium in Anaheim, Calif., made up for his disappointing 16th place finish two weeks earlier at the same site.

His Monster Energy Kawasaki teammate Jake Weimer held the early advantage in the main event, taking the holeshot ahead of the Honda Muscle Milk duo of Justin Barcia and Trey Canard.

Canard took the lead in Lap 2 and last week’s winner Barcia moved briefly into second on Lap 3 before coming short on a triple jump and crashing out. That opened room for Rockstar Suzuki‘s Davi Millsaps and Villopoto to move into the top three. Villopoto passed Millsaps on Lap 5 and took over the lead a lap later, hanging on to win by 6.886 seconds. Continue Reading »

Ryan Villopoto and Jake Weimer have signed multi-year contract extensions with Kawasaki, ensuring the two riders will continue competing for Team Green in AMA Supercross and AMA Motocross championships through 2013 and beyond.

Villopoto and Kawasaki have been a winning combination both indoors and outdoors. Villopoto won three 250 motocross titles and a Supercross Lites West Region title with Kawasaki before moving up to the 450 class in 2009, winning two Supercross races in his rookie year.

An injury cut short his 2010 season but Villopoto returned to action in 2011, winning a tightly-fought Supercross title by four points over Chad Reed and 10 points over Ryan Dungey. Villopoto carried the momentum from his first 450 title by winning the 2011 AMA Motocross title, the Motocross of Nations Chamberlin trophy and claimed the $1 million prize for winning all three motos in the Monster Energy Cup. Ryan Dungey returned to the top of the podium for the first time since late February with a victory at Rice-Eccles Stadium in Salt Lake City, Utah. With the injured Ryan Villopoto already crowned the 2012 AMA Supercross Champion, the win put Dungey back in contention for second overall.

The Red Bull KTM last tasted victory Feb. 25 in Atlanta, Ga., but missed five rounds due to injury. Dungey returned to action last week in Seattle, Wash., placing sixth, but staged a late come-from-behind win in Utah for his third victory of the 2012 AMA Supercross season.

For most of the race, it looked like a sure victory for Davi Millsaps. The JGRMX Yamaha rider took the holeshot and led the opening 18 laps. Monster Energy Kawasaki‘s Jake Weimer was second for most of the race with Dungey biding his time in third. Continue Reading »

Ryan Villopoto has captured the 2012 AMA Supercross Championship with a dominating performance at Reliant Stadium in Houston, Texas.

The Monster Energy Kawasaki racer took the lead early in the race after passing holeshot-taker Davi Millsaps on the opening lap. Villopoto would lead the rest of the way for his eighth win of the season.

At 296 points and just four rounds remaining, Villopoto has an insurmountable lead in the championship standings over Red Bull KTM‘s Ryan Dungey who missed his fourth consecutive race due to injury. While his main competitors have been out with various injuries, Villopoto has been simply dominant, winning 23 of the last 46 AMA Supercross events.

Defending champion Ryan Villopoto won his third consecutive AMA Supercross race in Arlington, Texas, but the victory was overshadowed by a season-ending injury suffered by one of his main challengers Chad Reed.

TwoTwo Motorsport Honda‘s Reed trailed Villopoto in second place for the first six laps at Cowboys Stadium. Disaster struck on Lap 7 however as Reed crashed hard in the whoops. Initial evaluations revealed a broken tibia and fibula, a torn anterior cruciate ligament, two broken ribs and a broken vertebrae. Doctors are waiting for the swelling in Reed’s knee to subside before conducting surgery.

As a result, Reed’s Supercross season is over and the veteran will instead focus on recuperating in time for the outdoor AMA Motocross season.

Ryan Dungey gave KTM its first ever AMA Supercross win, taking the holeshot and leading every lap in Phoenix, Ariz.

With an audience of 49,236 watching at Chase Field, it was the field that had to chase Dungey during the main event. Dungey jumped out in front at the first corner followed by JGRMX Yamaha‘s Davi Millsaps and defending AMA Supercross Champion Ryan Villopoto of Kawasaki.

The race was essentially decided when Millsaps crashed in the sand section on that opening lap, taking Villopoto down with him. Continue Reading »
