In a rare move, Harley-Davidson has unveiled a base version of its Breakout months after first launching the exclusive Custom Vehicle Operations version. Presented at the 2013 Daytona Bike Week, the 2013 Harley-Davidson Breakout offers a similar low and muscular profile as the CVO version but at prices starting at $17,899 compared to the premium model’s $26,999 price point.

Tom Roderick reviewed the 2013 Harley-Davidson CVO Breakout last August, saying it “continues the tradition of exclusivity, performance and style customers have come to expect from Harley-Davidson’s Custom Vehicle Operations.” But take away the premium CVO features and what do you have? We’ll find out soon after our resident Hipster-baiter Jon Langston completes his upcoming review.

In the meantime, here’s what we do know. The Breakout is powered by Harley-Davidson‘s Twin Cam 103B engine rather than the CVO model’s larger Twin Cam 110B engine. As with the CVO, a slender 130mm wide cast aluminum spoked wheel leads the way while the rear sports a thick 240mm tire. A chopped front fender contrasts against the Breakout’s thick fork while the drag-style handlebar and shaved fuel tank console help provide a low profile. Continue Reading »

The bulk of the 2013 Harley-Davidson model lineup has been revealed in documents released by the California Air Resources Board. While this is a fairly lengthy list of models, it may not be complete as Harley-Davidson sometimes saves a couple of new model announcements for later in the year.

Most of the models revealed are returning models but there are a couple of omissions as well as several additions, including new anniversary models celebrating Harley-Davidson’s upcoming 110th anniversary.

The list includes three new models, including two additions to the Custom Vehicle Operations line. The Road King gets the CVO treatment next year as does a new model called the CVO Softail Breakout. There isn’t any information on the Softail Breakout except that it will use the 110ci (1802cc) engine like all the other CVO models. Another addition is the Street Bob NGP which also gets Harley-Davidson’s 103ci (1687cc) engine while the regular Street Bob will use the 96 ci (1584cc). Beyond that, it’s not clear what separates the NGP from the base version. Continue Reading »

Harley-Davidson is issuing a recall for 250,757 units from its Touring, CVO Touring and Trike line from model years 2009 – 2012.

The rear brake light switch on the models in question may become degraded due to the heat from the exhaust systems. This may affect brake light function and may result in a brake fluid leak.

According to documents released by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the problem was first identified in June 2010 after a Harley-Davidson Trike model lost rear brake function due to a fluid leak. A month later, Harley-Davidson received a report of an alledged crash with a similar problem.
