An ingenious idea at a recent Star press junket, however, ensured a journalistic derriere in the 250’s seat by making it the most valuable bike available.

The one-off GYTR-equipped Yamaha YZF-R1 ridden by “King” Kenny Roberts at this year’s U.S. Grand Prix at Laguna Seca was auctioned for $87,000.

Roberts and late night television star Jay Leno were the special guest auctioneers for the R1 at Mecum’s Motorcycle Auction in Monterey, Calif. The final bid came from Milton Verret for $87,000. Proceeds from the auction will benefit Bailey’s Café, a non-profit arts program in Brooklyn, N.Y.

“I’m kinda surprised that someone would pay for a bike that I sat my butt on and worked the rear tire on pretty good,” says Roberts. “But, it was for a good cause, and Milton really came through for Bailey’s Café.”

One-of-a-Kind Yamaha R1 Ridden By “King” Kenny Roberts Auctioned for Charity Raises $87,000!

Monterey, CA August 18, 2011 – The special, one-of-a-kind Yamaha® GYTR-equipped YZF-R1®, featuring Yamaha’s 50th Anniversary red-and-white paint scheme and ridden in demonstration laps by Kenny Roberts at last month’s Red Bull United States Grand Prix at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, was sold to the highest bidder at Mecum’s Motorcycle Auction this past Thursday night in Monterey, CA. Special guest auctioneers for the event were Roberts himself, along with television personality Jay Leno.

Proceeds from the auction benefited Bailey’s Café, a non-profit organization that brings youth and elders together through the arts and services and is located in Brooklyn, NY. The highest bidder was Milton Verret, who engaged in some spirited bidding and signaled his approval of a final bid and donations totaling $87,000 before the gavel fell.

Commenting on the auction, Leno said, “That was a lot of fun hanging out with Kenny, and I’m excited for the kids at Bailey’s Café in Brooklyn. That winning bid from Milton is going to buy a lot of supplies!”

Roberts added, “I’m kinda surprised that someone would pay for a bike that I sat my butt on and worked the rear tire on pretty good. But, it was for a good cause, and Milton really came through for Bailey’s Café.”

“This auction was another exciting event in our ongoing celebration of Yamaha’s 50th Anniversary of World Grand Prix Racing,” said Bob Starr, General Manager, National Communications for Yamaha’s Motorsports Group. “With Kenny and Jay involved in the fun—and for such a worthwhile cause—it was an especially memorable event.”

Motorcyclists are a charitable bunch and this is another great example. The “Ride with the Forty” has been organized to remember and honor the forty women and men who were killed when their plane crashed near Shanksville, PA on September 11, 2001. Another goal is to raise $250,000 for the Flight 93 National Memorial, 100% of all donations will go directly to building the memorial.

On September 3, 2009, the five core motorcycle riders will depart from Newark International Airport at 8:42 a.m., the actual departure location and time of United Flight 93, and will be joined by hundreds of other riders along the approximate 3,000-mile journey.

More details after the jump.

Back in 1997, an unusual motorcycle appeared on the front page of the Bristol Evening Post. Unable to afford a costly traditional sidecar, bus driver Alan Iles of Bedminster opted to build his own, using a bathtub. Twelve years later, the 1959 650cc BSA is still going and has been ridden all over Europe to help raise money for Cancer research and various charities, for which he has raised thousands of British pounds. Over the last dozen years, the only modifications made have been a splash of new paint and the addition of a seatbelt, so that his grandchildren can come along for the ride.

The second annual auction in Dubai for Cinema Against AIDS on Friday raised $1.8 million for the cause. An abundance of Hollywood stars made it out to support or chair the event, including, Goldie Hawn, Salma Hayek, Oliver Stone, Laura Linney and Sharon Stone, to name a few. The highest selling item of the night went to the “Terminator Salvation” premiere package which contained tickets to the premiere as well as the “Moto-Terminator” from the movie. The price? $140,000.

Victor Kubicek from the company that produced the latest Terminator installment was obviously pleased but also exclaimed you would have to be a stunt-man to actually drive it. One should however keep in mind that “practical” is a concept that does not exist in Dubai.
