Ural, the funky motorcycle sidecar manufacturer from Russia, is boasting a 39% increase in unit sales for 2011. Considering the company’s total expected output for last year was approximately 1,100 models, you won’t notice an influx of sidehacks dominating your local roadways, but this is really good news for the small manufacturer of eclectic two-wheelers, especially in the midst of a deficient economy.

Ural recognized an article in the New York Times and a collaboration with bike builder James Hammarhead for some of the company’s increasing popularity. We like to think our positive review of the Ural Gear-Up model last year as cause for Ural’s booming market share. Some may consider our love of this machine to be irrational, but we’re in the company of Ural owners including Brad Pitt and Ewan McGregor, who both added Urals to their garages in 2011.

Sabater helped organize the May 26 AMA Family Capitol Hill Climb which brought families to Washington D.C. to lobby in favor of overturning the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act’s ban on youth motorcycles containing trace amounts of lead. Sabater also produced a number of videos featuring racers and industry personalities speaking out against the ban.

JCR Honda earned another Baja 1000 victory. (From left to right) Johnny Campbell, Logan Holladay, Kendall Norman, Quinn Cody.

After more than 14 hours of racing, the overall motorcycle win for the 2011 SCORE Baja 1000 still came down to the wire. At the finish line in Ensenada, Mexico, the 1x JCR Honda CRF450X and the 11x Kawasaki KX450F were separated by only 10 minutes, but in the end Kendall Norman, Quinn Cody and Logan Holladay earned another Baja 1000 victory for Honda.

This year, the Baja veterans Norman and Cody decided to add another racer due to the roughness of the course, and instead of taking on another racer with tons of Baja experience, they went with the talented rider but inexperienced Baja racer in Holladay. The JCR Honda 1x team decided it was a worthwhile risk.

“You know, it was a good thing. We need another guy for this race to break it up,” Cody said. “Last year it was the Peninsula run, 1100 miles, and we did it with two guys. But this course was so rough we needed to add another guy.

Alpinestars’ Tech Air suit has been included in “Popular Science” magazine’s Best of What’s New list for its coming December 2011 issue.

The MotoGP-derived wireless airbag-equipped racing suit was one of eight products named in the annual award’s “Recreation” category for its safety features.

The Tech Air suit tracks the wearer’s body movements. When the sensors pick up an unusual movement indicating an impending crash, it triggers two nitrogen-based gas canisters in the suit which inflates two airbags protecting the rider’s shoulders and collarbone.
