Pirelli sure knows how to make an impression. Is there a more dramatic way to test the stopping ability of Pirelli’s new Angel GT sport touring tire, than on the flight deck of an aircraft carrier? After all, these surfaces are used to the physics of 30,000-pound fighter jets decelerating from 150 mph to a dead stop in a matter of seconds. Surely that should suffice for a Kawasaki Ninja 1000 stopping from a speed of just 60 mph.

And that’s just what Pirelli decided to do, holding the press launch of the Angel GT on the Italian Navy’s Cavour aircraft carrier anchored in the Mediterranean Sea at the Marina Militare‘s  Taranto Naval base. And if that’s not enough, Pirelli enlisted the recently-retired World Superbike Champion Max Biaggi to show the collection of journalists – including our very own Troy Siahaan – how it’s done. Taking a certified motorcycle safety course is an important first step when learning to ride, but then what? Our 10 tips are things the MO staff has learned from our years of riding.

Motorcycling is a fun and exciting endeavor, but it has its dangers. From inattentive drivers to a little dirt in the road, there are countless scenarios that can present hazards, especially to less-experienced riders. As a new rider, possibly fresh out of the MSF course with a fresh motorcycle endorsement on your license, you should know the real world poses challenges you simply don’t experience in an empty parking lot.

The Motorcycle.com staff is full of highly experienced riders, but we were all beginners at some point. Over the years we have learned many tips and tricks that have helped us stay safe when we’re riding a motorcycle, so we decided to put together a list of things to keep in mind when you’re out riding. Most any rider will find kernels of wisdom here, but we’re focusing in on the “noob” segment to teach tactics that will help short-cut the learning process.

Notice the phrase “riding tips.” We’ll focus on things you can try while actually riding your motorcycle and assume you’re already wearing the best helmet and gear you can afford. Now, here are 10 riding tips we wish we knew when we were starting out.

More than half of the new BMW R 1200 GSs that roll off the assembly line in 2013 will be fitted with Michelin’s new big trail tire, the Anakee III. BMW and Michelin worked together to co-develop the dual-sport tire, which is designed to deliver all the safety and off road capability big trail motorcycle users demand. The Anakee III will also be available as a replacement option for other leading dual sport bikes, like the Suzuki V-Strom, Kawasaki KLR, Triumph Tiger and Yamaha Super Tenere.

Continental Tire announced a voluntary recall campaign for certain ContiMotion sport-touring tires.

According to Continental, market feedback has shown some tires may experience uneven wear from the 180/60R16 74H ContiMotion rear tires. Tires may develop groove cracking and, in some cases, belt lift, conditions which can lead to a loss of tire inflation pressure and a potential for loss of control.

The problem has been observed on ContiMotion rear tires equipped on Honda Gold Wing tourers, particularly when carrying a large load or when the tires are under-inflated. Continental has not received any accident reports related to this issue. Continue Reading »

The 2013 Triumph Trophy is being recalled because a NHTSA label listing the sport-tourer’s tire data has the wrong information.

According to documents released by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the tire label on some Triumph Trophy models list erroneous tire and laden weight information. The labels are mandated by NHTSA and can be found affixed to the left side of the main frame headstock on the Trophy. The correct information should specify a 120/70 17 front tire and a 190/55 17 rear tire for the Trophy.

Customers looking for replacement tires may be relying on the wrong information posted on the label, and may thus purchase the wrong tires. Using the wrong tires may affect the motorcycle’s performance and increase the risk of injury. Continue Reading »

Pirelli recently unveiled the latest version of its Diablo Supercorsa tire. The high-performance tire is designed primarily for racing and performance-oriented street riding.

The newest member of the Diablo family was presented during EICMA 2011 at Pirelli’s flagship retail location, PZero Moda store, opened this past September on the famed Corso Venezia in Milan.

Kawasaki is issuing a recall on the 2011 Vulcan Classic LT tourer due to a risk of damage to the tires’ inner tubes.

According to documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the inner tubes on some Kawasaki Vulcan Classic LT models may become pinched near the valve stem during mounting. In some cases, this may result in a loss of air pressure.

Dunlop has signed a deal with Dorna Sports and the International Road Racing Teams Association to supply tires for the Moto2 and Moto3 Grand Prix World Champions through 2014.

The new agreement extends Dunlops’ role as Moto2 tire supplier and adds the new Moto3 class to Dunlop’s duties. Dunlop has been the spec tire supplier for Moto2 since the class replaced the former 250cc class in 2010. The Moto3 class replaces the 125cc class next season.

“Moto3 is an exciting new Championship for Dunlop, our engineers and technicians and we relish the new challenge, and look forward to the progress in our understanding as we develop tires for the new 250cc 4-stroke powered racing machines,” says Jean-Felix Bazelin, general manager of Dunlop Motorsport. “The extension of our Moto2 contract is a strong validation of the good job we have done in that Championship, the results of which are clear to see.”

Bridgestone’s contract to supply tires for the premier MotoGP class also expires after the 2014 season.
