Italian electric motorcycle company CRP unveiled the new Energica in a live streaming presentation last week, but the electric sportbike has now made its “real life” public debut, appearing at the 2012 EICMA Show in Milan.
The CRP Energica is the first production motorcycle to be produced in Italy, and it carries some impressive specs. CRP claims an output of 134 hp out of the Energica’s permanent magnet AC motor. That’s not close to being as powerful as the Lightning Motorcycle’s upcoming which claims 167 hp, but significantly higher than the Brammo Empulse R‘s claim of 54 hp.
CRP also claims a range of 93.2 miles from its 11.7 kWh battery. Other features include LED lightning, Brembo monobloc calipers, Marchesini wheels, a fully-adjustable Marzocchi fork and a fully-adjustable Sachs monoshock. Continue Reading »
Italian electric motorcycle manufacturer CRP unveiled a near-production prototype of its new Energica sportbike. Due to appear at next week’s EICMA show in Milan, the Energica will enter production in 2014 for the U.S. and European markets.
The first electric motorcycle to be entirely developed and produced in Italy, the Energica is the product of CRP’s experience in TTXGP racing. Racer Alessandro Branetti won the 2010 TTXGP European Championship on the Energica’s predecessor, the eCRP 1.2 and finished second in the World Championship that same year.
According to CRP, the Energica is equipped with an 11.7 kWh battery, a significant jump from the 7.4 kWh battery equipped on the eCRP 1.4, the latest iteration of the eCRP. By comparison, the battery on the Brammo Empulse has a capacity of 10.2 kWh while the Zero S has a maximum capacity of 9.0 kWh. Continue Reading »
Daytona International Speedway played host to the TTXGP World Final, where TTXGP competitors from its three regions — Australia, Europe and North America — would battle it out for top honors. This marked the first time in the famed speedway’s history it has ever hosted an electric motorcycle race of any kind, making the event a truly historic moment. The grandeur of the event wasn’t lost on 2010/2011 TTXGP World Final Champion Matthias Himmelman and Australian champion Jason Morris, as they dug deep to raise the funds necessary to make the trip to Daytona to race against two-time, and defending North American champ, Steve Atlas aboard the Team Icon Brammo Empulse entry. Italian electric motorcycle company CRP will unveil a running prototype of its upcoming Energica streetbike at the Casa Enzo Ferrari Museum. The presentation will take place Nov. 7 and will be streamed live over the Internet, giving the public the chance to see the Energica before it will be the focus of CRP’s stand at the EICMA show a week later.
A concept version of the Energica was shown at last year’s EICMA show in Milan, Italy, but the CRP is ready to present its fully operational prototype for 2012. Though the company did not compete in either the TTXGP or FIM e-Power electric racing series this year, CRP does boast a racing heritage behind its Energica.
The CRP Energica is based on the company’s eCRP race bike first unveiled in 2010. Later that year, CRP and racer Alessandro Branetti won the TTXGP‘s European Championship before finishing second in the World Championship final to Muench Racing and rider Matthias Himmelmann. CRP followed that up with a third place finish in the 2011 TTXGP European circuit. Continue Reading »
Team Zongshen rider Yu Tang came through in a surprise win in Sunday’s FIM e-Power International Championship event at Oschersleben. After teammate Ho Chi Fung’s respectable third place in Saturday’s three-lap sprint, Tang found himself on the highest step of the podium after favorites, and Munch Racing teammates, Matthias Himmelmann and Katja Poensgen experienced mechanical trouble. The Zongshen rider took the chequered flag at the end of the ten-lap race ahead of Udo Reichmann (Reichmann Racing-Mavizen) and Christian Amendt (epo-Bike). Continue Reading »
Usually new technology seen in racing eventually trickles down to consumer vehicles after a few years of development and testing. What happens then when an entire motorcycle makes the transition from race bike to street bike? The answer is the $20,400 Energica, an all-electric sportbike from Italian manufacturer CRP Racing.
We expect to see many new electric motorcycles unveiled at next week’s EICMA show in Milan, Italy, but CRP’s electric superbike promises to be one of the standouts. The Italian company will unveil its new electric sportbike on November 8 when its name and official specifications will be revealed.
CRP Racing has campaigned its eCRP in European electric racing for the past two years, finishing in the runner-up title positions in the FIM e-Power & TTXGP championships in both 2010 and 2011 seasons.
