Freedom Friday is a call-to-action on the AMA’s Facebook page each Friday to alert motorcyclists about issues posing threats to motorcycling freedoms. Riders can partake in a weekly contest related to these issues and win prizes. Each week’s Freedom Friday photo contest asks AMA members to send a photo of themselves, preferably with their bike, near a symbol of the current topic.

The issue that kicks off today is access discrimination, which can be illustrated with a photo of a “No Motorcycles Allowed” sign, “Wilderness” sign or anything related to freedom to illustrate their concern as a motorcyclist. Even a photo of a “Welcome Bikers” banner or a trailhead sign indicating motorcycles are allowed would work, showing that proper efforts can gain motorcyclists access to streets and areas. Photo(s) and the AMA member number should be sent to the AMA at grassroots@ama-cycle.org to be entered in the contest.

Austin, Texas, based Twisted Pixel is developing a new video game featuring a sassy sentient motorcycle martial artist racing down highways and fighting an army of jetpack-equipped special agents. Yes, that sounds pretty silly, but it’s clear Twisted Pixel’s upcoming “LocoCycle” doesn’t take itself too seriously. That being said, the game looks to be quite fun.

Here’s a quick synopsis. I.R.I.S. is a talking, intelligent motorcycle assassin trying to fight her way to defeat her evil counterpart S.P.I.K.E. Think a motorcycle version of K.I.T.T. from “Knight Rider” with a black belt. LocoCycle’s gameplay consists of I.R.I.S. hurtling down a highway dodging traffic and leaping up in the air to lay slap, chop, punch and run over dozens of enemies, all the while dragging along Pablo, her erstwhile mechanic/comic relief.

Like I said, silly yet fun. Continue Reading »

If you grew up in the ’80s and spent some a lot of time in arcades, you’re probably familiar with the game “Hang-On”. Released in 1985 by Sega Enterprises, motorcycle racing game  “Hang-On” broke ground by using a motorcycle-shaped seat as a controller. Players raced a virtual motorcycle on a track, leaning on the plastic motorcycle to steer the in-game bike.

Hang-On’s creator, game designer Yu Suzuki, is being honored by the video game industry with the Pioneer Award at the 2011 Game Developers Choice Awards. Suzuki created many games in his career, from fighting game “Virtua Fighter” to adventure game “Shenmue”, but his first big hit was “Hang-On” which spawned a sequel in 1986′s “Super Hang-On”.

The Pioneer Award recognizes an individual “responsible for developing a breakthrough technology, game concept, or gameplay design at a crucial juncture in video game history, paving the way for the many developers who followed them.” Suzuki will be presented the award March 2 at the San Francisco Moscone Center during the Game Developers Conference.

“To develop this game,” Suzuki once told G4TV, “I rode on motorcycles a lot. When we came up with the prototype (for the arcades), I would ride on that prototype bike for hours and hours every day.”
