Michael Dunlop ended the 2016 Isle of Man TT week with a bang, setting a new outright lap record on his way to winning the Senior TT. Earlier in the week, Dunlop became the first man to lap the 37.74-mile Mountain Course in less than 17 minutes, coming in at 16:58.439 or an average speed of 133.369 mph in the Superbike TT.

That record fell on the second lap of the Senior TT as Dunlop posted a time of 16:53.929 for an average speed of 133.962 mph to set a new outright lap record.

Dunlop established a lead early in the Senior TT, leading Ian Hutchinson by 1.8 seconds through Glen Helen. The lead doubled by the time he reached the Ballaugh Bridge. Dunlop would then complete the opening lap with a time of 16:59.304, beating the 17-minute mark for the third time.

Lap two was even faster with Dunlop setting the new course record before entering pit lane with a 9.2-second lead over Hutchinson. When they entered the pits for the second time after Lap 4, Dunlop’s lead had grown to 10.6 seconds. Quick work from his pit crew got Dunlop back on the track faster than Hutchinson, giving him another 5 seconds.

Dunlop would eventually finish the six-lap Senior TT with a time of 1:43:56.129, averaging a speed of 130.685 mph. Hutchinson finished second with John McGuinness completing the podium.
