Moto2 racer Luis Salom has succumbed to injuries suffered in a crash at Catalunya. The incident occurred during the second Free Practice session at turn 12. Salom traveled straight into the corner, sliding across the gravel and hitting the air fence at a very high speed. He was 24.

According to an official statement from MotoGP.com, two medical cars, two ambulances and a helicopter were deployed. The decision was made to transfer Salom by ambulance to the Hospital General de Catalunya where he underwent surgery but passed away from the injuries.

The Stop and Go racer was competing in his eighth Grand Prix season, the last three in Moto2. His highest championship finish came in the 2012 Moto3 championship where he finished second behind Sandro Cortese. Though he finished third the following year, his results were even better in 2013, setting personal records with seven wins, 12 podiums and four poles.
