Honda Recalls 29,232 Motorcycles In Japan
Honda is recalling 29,232 motorcycles in Japan, spanning 37 models because of a problem with their starters. As of this writing, the recall has only been announced for the Japanese market though it’s possible other models (including those not included among the 37) destined for other markets may be affected.
According to Honda, the starter magnetic switch may not have received the proper waterproof treatment, resulting in excessive heat that may damage the fuse or the wiring harness. This problem may result in an engine stall or a short circuiting starter magnetic switch and may result in a fire.
Honda will inspect the starter magnetic switch and, if necessary, replace it with a non-defective part. Honda may also replace the wire harness if there are signs of damage.

As we mentioned, a recall has only been confirmed in Japan so far, but seeing as how a part like a starter can be shared across multiple models, it’s possible that other motorcycles produced for other markets may have the same problem. Several of the recalled models, such as the CB400 Super Bol D’or pictured at top, are only available in Japan. Models such as the CB400F, CBR400R and 400X are mechanically similar to the CB500F, CBR500R and CB500X (the main difference is a smaller displacement to meet Japan’s licensing categories) offered in other markets, so the 500 series models may be affected as well.
Motorcycle.com will provide an update if the recall is expanded to include other models and markets.
