The San Mateo Police Department, located in Northern California, just south of San Francisco, has purchased a 2013 Zero DS Police edition to include into its downtown patrol unit.
The Zero DS Police edition, which is built specifically for the needs of law enforcement officials based on their direct input, was selected due to the motorcycle’s reliability, low maintenance, battery range and capacity, maneuverability, light weight chassis, as well as its economical feasibility.
San Mateo now becomes one of the many law enforcement agencies worldwide utilizing Zeros in their fleet. Other notable departments include:
- Bogota Police Department
- Foothill/De Anza College Campus Police Department
- Hong Kong Police Department
- Monterrey Police Department
- San Jose State University Police Department
- Santa Cruz Police Department
- Scotts Valley Police Department
San Mateo Police Department Deputy Chief, Michael Callagy, stated that, “As a small community we wanted a motorcycle that could easily maneuver its way through our downtown traffic quietly and efficiently without disrupting the community.” He also praised the fact the DS could last an entire shift on one charge, lowering the department’s operating costs. As a small community that likes to host local events, Callagy also notes that the Zero DS allows officers to patrol and provide security without the offending noises and odors associated with traditional motorcycles.
