Lehman Trikes Suspends Operations – Company Future in Doubt

Lehman Trikes has suspended all operations after failing to find investors for its motorcycle trike conversion kit business.

The Spearfish, S.D., company says it needs an injection of capital in order to continue producing trikes. According to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, Lehman Trikes laid off some workers late in 2011 while the company sought new investors. That search was unsuccessful, leading the company to shut down operations while it seeks other avenues for new capital.

While the search for new funding continues, the company says there is no guarantee it will find enough to re-open operations.

It has been a rocky few months for the Lehman Trikes. The company’s founder, John K. Lehman, passed away suddenly in January.

Sad news. I owned a 1997 GTL conversion kit that was installed on my 1988 GL1500. The bike itself only had 22,000 miles on it when it had the conversion installed. I put 172,000 miles on that trike and never had any trouble with the bike or the Lehman add-on. Solid and handled good. I rode just about every other brand of conversion out there before I decided on the Lehman, and the Lehman was the best…just my experience of course. If you set all the conversions side-by-side and removed the bodywork so you couldn’t tell which brand it was, the build quality and engineering of the Lehman would stand out…at least for an engineering quality oriented person like me. It was so obvious. My trouble-free miles attests to that. And I wasn’t your typical take-it-easy-around-corners trike rider. I definitely tested the build-quality of that machine on every ride. Plus, I learned how to proficiently & safely ride that rig thanks to the Evergreen Safety Council and their excellent S/TEP program. I hope that Lehman can find a way to keep operating. John and Linda Lehman are some of the kindest folks I’ve had the pleasure of meeting. I got to ride with John during one of their Lehman Pride Rides through the NW and west coast about 12-13 years ago. Great man.

This is sad news indeed. I have ridden my HD sportster equiped with the Lehman Renegade four times across the U.S. and Canada. I love my trike and thought John a fantastic man with a great product. I have written several books about our travels – the latest is being dedicated to John. I feel bad that he won’t be able to read what he did for me. My heart goes out to his family.
