It’s not unusual for motorcycle manufacturers to produce special edition models to honor a racer. It is unusual when that racer doesn’t compete on one that manufacturer’s machines though. Nevertheless, Interwetten Racing‘s Thomas Luthi, who rides a Honda-powered Suter machine in the Moto2 World Championship is a BMW brand ambassador, and thus, the German manufacturer has produced a limited edition R1200GS in his name.

Available only for Luthi’s native Switzerland, the BMW R1200GS Tom Luthi Edition will be presented at the 2012 Swiss Moto show, Feb. 16 in Zurich. Switzerland is obviously an important market for BMW, being adjacent to the German manufacturer’s home. The R1200GS is also BMW’s best-selling model, worldwide but also in Switzerland where it has topped the sales charts seven years running.

The Luthi edition GS features an a black color scheme accented by BMW’s brand colors include a blue brake caliper. Other details include a tinted windscreen, matte silver GS logo on the rear fender and Luthi’s logo on the front fender.

BMW will only produce 100 units of the Luthi edition R1200GS. Each unit will be individually numbered on the fuel tank lid.
