Motorcycle accident tragically claimed his life

Every year on the 11th day of the 11th month we pause to remember those who lost their lives and continue to make sacrifices for the freedom we are able to enjoy in our daily lives. This day also serves as a day that we should pause to reflect on two men who made a significant contribution to the world of music and were also fellow motorcycle riders who died while riding.

One of the founding members and bassist from “The Allman Brothers”, Berry Oakley died from his injuries in a motorcycle accident 36 years ago today on November 11, 1972. The accident happened in Macon, Georgia with a bus, ironically just a few blocks from where guitarist Duane Allman died in a motorcycle accident the year before colliding with a truck, Oakley and Allman were both 24 years old at the time of their untimely and premature deaths.

After the accident with the bus, Oakley insisted that he was okay and refused medical treatment. Three hours later he was taken to the hospital and died of a brain hemorrhage due to a skull fracture. In 1998, a bridge on State Highway 19, in Macon, Georgia was designated as the “Raymond Berry Oakley III Bridge” in his memory.

Berry and Duane are buried next to each other in Macon’s Rose Hill Cemetery.

Lest We Forget
